Camillo Ynitia's Adobe

A shingled shed now protects the ruins of Camilo Ynitia’s adobe home from further weather damage. Dating from the late 1830’s this structure represents a period when the Wiwok were abandoning their traditional dwellings in favor of more sheltered adobe houses.

Encouraged by his friend, Mariano Vallejo, Ynitia sought and was granted title to 8,800 acres around Olompali village by the Mexican government in 1843. In addition to raising over 600 head of cattle, he cultivated grain fields and a small vineyard. Ynitia became a successful rancher through trade with the Mexicans, the Russians and early American settlers. His land grant was confirmed in 1852 by the United States Government, thus becoming the only Native American in Northern California to have his land grant ratified.

The only skirmish of the Bear Flag Rebellion occurred here on June 14, 1846, between Mexican soldiers and the Bear Flaggers from Sonora. The short lived Battle of Olompali resulted in the death of a Mexican officer.

This house was built in 1776 by the father of Camillo Ynitia or Unitia, the last chief of the Olompali Indians. The Indians were taught to make adobe bricks by Lieutenant Bodega and his party while they were surveying and charting the harbor of San Francisco Bay. The old adobe house is inside the house now on the site.

Updated description:

Formerly known as "Oldest House North of San Francisco Bay." Reportedly built as a one room adobe in 1776 with the assistance of Lieutenant Bodega's survey party under the King of Spain, further research indicates a more likely two-part construction beginning in 1834. The Camilo Ynitia Adobe is named in recognition of the only U.S. land grant owned and maintained by a Native American in Alta California.</text>

Wa Jen Ha Lio

One of the earliest, largest, and most productive Chinese fishing villages in California, China Camp was in operation by 1870. The Chinese immigrants and their descendants introduced the use of commercial netting to catch bay shrimp off Point San Pedro. The shrimp were then dried and exported to Chinese throughout the world. China Camp represents the last surviving Chinese shrimp fishing village in California.

Plaque placed by the State Department of Parks and Recreation in cooperation with the Marin Chinese Cultural Group, October 4, 1980.

The Glorious Golden Gate

Born and raised in San Francisco, the pride of "the Bear Flag State," my heart knows it's coming home, when I cross the Golden Gate.

Greeting Marin County, she spans the ocean's roar, connecting to the headlands, rolling hills and rocky shore.

Born of a dream, "It can't be done" they cried, but gallantly she stands, a monument to man, his aspirations and his pride.

Lofty spires reaching for the sky, royal arches beckon you; she's the nugget of the west coast, queen of the Pacific blue.

Circling her towers are crowns of silver mist, peeking through the fog banks, mister sun blows her a kiss.

Smiling a sunny welcome to strangers out at sea; feeling her outstretched arms is coming home to me!

We love you, Marin County, out emerald by the bay. And to the glorious golden gate, happy 50th birthday.

Written by Judy Borello.

Construction of the bridge started in 1933. Engineer Joseph Strauss and architect Irving Morrow created an extraordinarily beautiful bridge in an extraordinarily beautiful setting. The designs for the Golden Gate Bridge showed the greatest attention to artistic detail, especially on the two streamlined moderne towers. The bridge's 4,200 feet of clear span (from tower to tower) was the longest in the world until 1959. On April 19, 1937, the bridge was completed and the official dedication took place on May 27.

Marin County Civic Center

The Civic Center Complex was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright (1869-1959) near the end of his long career. The administration Building was completed in 1962 and the Hall of Justice in 1970. They are the only government buildings designed by the distinguished architect that were ever actually constructed. The project fully embodied Wright's ideal of organic architecture-a synthesis of buildings and landscape. In Wright's words, the structures were planned to 'melt into the sunburnt hills.'

Plaque placed by the State Department of Parks and Recreation in cooperation with the citizens of Marin County. 1- Nova Albion

On June 17, 1579, Captain Francis Drake sailed his ship, Golden Hinde, into the Gulf of the Farallones and the bay that now bears his name. He sighted these white cliffs and named the land Nova Albion.

During his 36 day encampment in California, Drake repaired his ship, established contact with local Indians, explored inland, took on supplies and water, and claimed the region for Queen Elizabeth I.

The Golden Hinde set sail on July 25 and ventured into the unknown Pacific. Reaching Plymouth, England on September 26, 1560, after a voyage of two years and nine months, Drake became the first Englishman and expedition commander to circumnavigate the earth.

Drake’s exploits and claim encouraged England to colonize Roanoke in 1585, and Jamestown in 1607. Captain John Smith, in 1616, named the east coast New England, a reflection of Drake’s Nova Albion.

Sir Francis Drake Quadricentennial Committee June 16, 1979

2 - In Commemoration of The Landing Place of Francis Drake H.M.S. When his work was nearly completed, he made a journey “up the land” where he found the inland “farre different from the shoare, a goodly country….”

Before departing to complete his circumnavigation of the world, he erected a monument of a “great and firm post” with a plate of brass to claim the land for Queen Elizabeth I, naming it Nova Albion for the white cliffs “which lie toward the sea.”
